Established in 1850, the University of Sydney is the oldest educational institution in Australia. The University of Sydney is a government-supported top research-oriented university, with 16 departments and nearly 230 majors, it becomes the university with most majors in Australia. The Australia Institute of Management Studies, established in 1977 jointly by the University of Sydney and University of New Southern Wales, is the largest and best business school in Australia. In addition, the university boasts the largest library in the southern hemisphere with a total collection of 4.5 million books.
The University of Sydney enjoys a long history and a high international reputation. During the 160 years since its foundation, it has been leading the teaching and researching in many fields with its graduates working for the governments, institutions, major companies in Australia and other places all around the world. The School of Engineering is established in 1883, and moved to the new place now in 1970s. It includes four departments and three centers. They are Department of Mechanical and Electrical Engineering, Department of Chemical Engineering, Department of Electronic Information Engineering, Department of Aerospace, Mechanical and Electrical Engineering, Australian Site Robot Center, Advanced Structural Engineering Center and Warren Center. The School of Engineering has two academicians, Professor Hugh Durrant-Whyte and Professor Mai Yui Wing, 13 senior members of international academic organizations with many alumni listed on the best 100 engineers in Australia.
The School of Engineering can award the bachelor degrees to the following majors: Chemical Engineering, Mechanical and Electric Engineering, Electronic Information Engineering and Aerospace, Mechanical and Electric Engineering. The research fields of the Faculty of Engineering cover Structural Engineering, Mechanical and Electric Engineering, Project Management, Wind Power Engineering, Bioengineering, Environment, Ocean, Processing System, Communication Technology, E-commerce, Audio Engineering, Site Robot Engineering, Advanced Materials, Materials Science, Combustion Engineering, Nanometer Materials, CAD System, Space Structure, Finite Element Analysis and Aerodynamics. There are around 400 graduates from the School of Engineering every year.
